Homeowner, pal face raps over viral illegal electric meter removal
Two individuals, including a homeowner, face criminal charges over a viral video showing the unauthorized and forcible removal of an electric meter from a house in a subdivision in Rodriguez, Rizal.
The video, which circulated online and reportedly occurred on April 8, showed a man removing a resident’s electric meter despite the occupant's objection, saying she had no outstanding debt with Meralco. The man was only heard saying, “Napag-utusan lang po (I was just instructed to do it).”
The occupant also heard in the video questioning the act and calling the man a thief, but the man did not respond as he continued removing the meter and left afterward.
Meralco immediately responded after learning of the incident and restored the occupant’s electricity service.
Meralco said it found out that the man acted on the orders of the property owner, who claimed that the occupant had not been paying rent and utilities.
However, Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe Zaldarriaga stated that electric meters are property of Meralco, and any unauthorized removal or damage is illegal and subject to legal action.
A criminal complaint of malicious mischief has been filed before the Rizal Provincial Prosecution on Thursday, April 16, citing deliberate damage to the company’s property.
“We would like to emphasize once again that electric meters are property of Meralco and any unauthorized removal or damage is illegal and subject to legal action,” Zaldarriaga said.
Meanwhile, he also urged the public to remain cautious of individuals falsely posing as Meralco personnel.
“We once again remind the public that all legitimate Meralco employees and contractors are in uniform with company ID, carry official field orders, and use clearly marked vehicles,” he said.
“We also urge the public to immediately report these illegal activities to us and to the proper authorities. We will continue to work closely with authorities to address illegal acts and protect the welfare of our customers,” he added.
