BACOLOD CITY – The City of Silay and the town of Isabela in Negros Occidental were hailed grand champions in this year’s Best of Festival Dances during the 30th Panaad sa Negros Festival at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan here.
Kansilay Festival of Silay City, tagged as “Paris of Negros,” bested six contingents in the city category and pocketed P120,000 during the competition on the festival opening day on Monday, April 13.
Named after Princess Kansilay, the warrior-heroine whose courage lives on in the city’s heart and name, the festival is a powerful tribute to Silay’s origins where myth meets memory, and culture is carved deep into every celebration, according to the Department of Tourism in Western Visayas.
First runner-up was San Carlos City’s PintaFlores Festival, which bagged P100,000 and P20,000 for Best Introduction Video award.
Talisay City’s Minuluan Festival was second runner-up and received P80,000; Kabankalan City’s Sinulog Festival was third runner-up and rewarded P50,000, and Cadiz City’s Dinagsa Festival was fourth runner-up and earned P30,000.
The following day, 13 local government units (LGUs) competed in the municipality category of the competition. Isabela’s Tigkalalag Festival was champion in the town’s grand comeback to the competition.
The Tigkalalag Festival is a unique, morbid-themed cultural celebration from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 in observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. A creative expression of thanksgiving for life and a tribute to departed loved ones, the festival reflects remembrance, artistry, and cultural identity.
First runner-up was La Castellana’s Bailes de Luces, which won the Best in Introduction video award. Murcia’s Tinabuay Festival was second runner-up, followed by Ilog’s Kisi-Kisi Festival as third runner-up. Fourth runner-up was E.B. Magalona’s Ugyonan Festival.
Other eight participants were Valladolid’s Pasundayag Festival, Moises Padilla’s Magayon Hinupatanan Festival, Calatrava’s Hudyaw Lilas Pandan Festival, Cauayan’s Lubay-Lubay Festival, Candoni’s Dinagyaw sa Tablas Festival, Hinoba-an’s Pagbana-ag Huba-Huba Festival, Pulupandan’s Salapan Festival, and Manapla’s Manang Pula Festival.
