TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan — A large auto supply store on Balzain Highway in Barangay Balzain West here was gutted by fire Tuesday night.
Fire Chief Insp. Francis Barcellano of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Tuguegarao said the blaze started at around 7:30 p.m.
The affected structure, estimated at around 1,000-square meters, housed heavy equipment tires, oil, acetylene, oxygen tanks, other highly flammable materials, and a resting area for workers and was owned by businessman Eduardo Lui who said the fire caused an estimated P100 million in damage to property.
Firemen had difficulty entering the establishment because its accordion doors were locked and had to use bolt cutters and heavy equipment to enter. The fire spread quickly because of the combustible materials stored inside.
The fire was declared under control at around 9 p.m. with the assistance of 15 fire trucks from Tuguegarao City, Cagayan and Isabela, and private responders, and a special airport fire truck from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) equipped with a foam attachment.
Tuguegarao City Mayor Maila Ting-Que said two water trucks from the city government and the Metro Tuguegarao Water District (MTWD) were also deployed.
No fatalities were reported. But some firemen were injured by splashing oil. Several residents were evacuated and temporarily sheltered at the Balzain West barangay hall. The private sector and the provincial government have extended assistance.
Following the fire, Que proposed the installation of fire hydrants here to strengthen fire preparedness and minimize damage in future emergencies. She also cited the need for smaller fire trucks, additional protective gear, oxygen masks, and specialized firefighting foam to improve response capabilities.
Que urged the public to remain vigilant, immediately report any fire to authorities, and avoid actions that may hamper rescue operations.
People were reminded to refrain from throwing cigarette butts and burning materials in open areas especially during summer when fire risks are higher.
Que thanked all agencies, responders, and volunteers who helped contain the blaze and reminded residents to always prioritize safety.
The BFP is investigating the cause of the fire and the total amount of damage.
