RARE Jade Vine plant found in Cagayan. (DENR Cagayan Valley FB)
A rare endemic plant known as the Jade Vine (Strongylodon macrobotrys) was discovered by the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO)-Alcala, Cagayan in the mountainous area of Sitio Hotspring, Asinga Via, Baggao, Cagayan.
CENRO-Alcala said they conducted field monitoring to properly document and assess the current condition of the plant known for its distinct turquoise-colored flowers.
The Jade Vine is a climbing plant that commonly grows in areas with sufficient shade. It depends on large trees for support as it develops within the forest.
CENRO-Alcala explained that the Jade Vine plays an important role in the ecosystem because it helps sustain pollinator activity, particularly among bats. It is also considered an indicator species, serving as a sign that the forest in the area remains healthy and relatively undisturbed by human activities.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) called on the public to support their environmental programs, especially in preserving the province’s natural resources and strengthening efforts to protect the environment.
