The Makati City government has launched the “P20 Rice Project: Benteng Bigas, Meron Na!” to provide affordable rice to vulnerable sectors on Tuesday, April 14.

The program aims to ease the impact of rising food costs by offering rice at P20 per kilo.

Beneficiaries include senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), solo parents, Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) members, and transport workers such as TODA and JODA groups.

Mayor Nancy Binay, along with national officials, led the launch at the Makati City Hall Quadrangle, where initial rice allocations were distributed to qualified beneficiaries.

“This program is a significant step toward ensuring food security for our most vulnerable communities. We are grateful to the national government for bringing this initiative to Makati, and we remain committed to supporting programs that uplift the lives of our residents,” Binay said.

The city government said the program will be expanded to barangays and public markets, including the Poblacion Public Market, to ensure wider and continuous distribution.

The initiative is part of the Kadiwa ng Pangulo program, which aims to strengthen the country’s food supply and make agricultural products more accessible.

The local government added that it will continue to work with national agencies to sustain the program and expand access to basic goods.

The event was also attended by national government representatives, including Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., (DA) Assistant Secretary Atty. Genevieve Guevarra, Food Terminal Incorporated President and CEO Joseph Lo, and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Romando Artes.
