Bol Bol was once again head-and-shoulders above everyone else, doing it on both ends of the floor as TNT survived an upset-conscious Blackwater, 99-94, in the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo on Tuesday, April 14.
The 7-foot-3 beanpole scored almost half of his team total output, dropping 48 points to go with 11 rebounds and seven blocks as the Tropang 5G weathered a late Bossing storm to improve to a share of the third spot with 4-2 record.
Criticized for what was deemed as lack of effort on both ends of the floor, Bol not only registered his season-high blocks but also defended well on Blackwater’s last two attempts that could have changed the outcome of the game.
Armed with his 7-foot-8 wingspan, Bol did just enough to bother Sedrick Barefield on the three-point attempt that would have put the Bossing ahead with 14 seconds left following their 9-0 run that cut the deficit to just one, 94-95.
Blackwater had another chance to give debuting head coach Pat Aquino a winning start but Bol once again challenged a game-winning four-point attempt from import Robert Upshaw III.
Jayson Castro was the only other double-digit scorer for TNT with 10 as Bol carried much of the scoring load.
Upshaw III paced the Bossing with 36 points and seven rebounds while Dalph Panopio chalked up 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Christian David had 12 points and 11 rebounds while Sedrick Barefield also had 12 although he shot 1-of-7 from the three-point territory.
Blackwater dropped to a 1-5 record, failing to snap the slide that led to the departure of Jeff Cariaso and the appointment of Aquino as new coach.
