MANILA, Philippines — A new national survey by Arkipelago Analytics shows that Filipino youth remain firmly opposed to restrictions on social media, even as many face worsening financial stress, lower happiness, and growing social disconnection. 

The findings show that 8 in 10 Filipino youth oppose any form of social media restriction, underscoring the importance of digital spaces in the daily lives of young Filipinos for communication, information, and participation in public discourse.

At the same time, the survey reveals significant concerns about well-being and quality of life. Half of respondents said they are experiencing lower levels of happiness, with food security, rising prices, and loneliness identified as the three most dominant issues affecting them.

Housing-related costs also emerged as a major burden. Seven in 10 respondents said they are having difficulty paying for rent or mortgage obligations, highlighting the growing strain of basic living expenses on younger Filipinos.

The survey also points to changing social and personal dynamics. Only 4 in 10 respondents said they are currently in a relationship, a finding that may reflect the wider pressures of economic uncertainty, shifting priorities, and social isolation.

“These findings show a generation that values freedom of expression and connection online, but is also carrying serious economic and emotional burdens,” said Anna Mae Lamentillo, Founder of Arkipelago Analytics. “For many young Filipinos, the main challenges are not abstract. They are immediate and deeply personal: affording basic needs, coping with rising prices, and dealing with loneliness.”

The survey was conducted from 26 February to 6 March 2026 through face-to-face interviews with a nationally representative sample of 1,400 Filipinos. The sampling design covered all 18 regions and included further classification by urban and rural clusters. National estimates carry a ±2% margin of error at a 96% confidence level, while subnational estimates for each geographic area carry a ±5% margin of error at a 95% confidence level.

Weighting adjustments were applied to align the regional distribution of respondents with COMELEC’s latest voter registration data, representing 68,618,667 registered voters. The final weighted regional proportions were 11% National Capital Region, 45% Luzon excluding NCR, 20% Visayas, and 24% Mindanao. Gender distribution was likewise aligned with COMELEC data at 51% female and 49% male.

Socioeconomic classification followed established consumer segmentation standards in the Philippines, with respondents distributed as 7% from Class ABC, 75% from Class D, and 18% from Class E.

The results provide an important snapshot of the realities facing Filipino youth in 2026 and point to the need for greater attention to affordability, well-being, and social support in shaping policies and public conversations that affect younger generations.
