House Speaker Faustino "Bojie" Dy III has assured Filipinos that the executive and legislature continue to work together to mitigate the impact of elevated fuel prices resulting from geopolitical events.
This, even as the House leader cited the big-time pump fuel price rollback scheduled for Tuesday, April 14 as a "positive development" and a sign of "immediate relief to Filipinos".
“Magandang balita ito para sa ating mga kababayan (This is good news for our countrymen). The executive is doing its part to cushion the impact of the Middle East crisis, and these rollbacks provide real and immediate relief," Dy said in a statement om Sunday night, April 13.
Shortly before this, President Marcos announced in a video message significant price rollbacks amounting to ₱20.89 per liter for diesel, ₱4.43 for gasoline, and ₱8.50 for kerosene on Tuesday.
Prior to this, pump prices of fuel were hiked by hefty amounts for five consecutive weeks, dating back to early March. This was directly following the United States (US) and Israel's attack on Iran, which caused tensions that spilled over to the oil-producing Middle East.
"Our task now in the House is to make sure these gains are reinforced, sustained, and translated into lower costs for food, transport, and basic goods,” said Dy, who represents the 6th district of Isabela.
He emphasized that the ongoing House Legislative Energy Action Development (LEAD) Joint Committee hearings were designed to complement executive actions by identifying policy tools that can help lock in the benefits of lower fuel prices, including the proposed KALINGA Act.
“Kailangan tuluy-tuloy ang aksyon. Kapag may mga positibong hakbang ang executive, dapat masundan ito ng mga panukala na magpapatatag ng supply chains, magpapababa ng logistics costs, at magpoprotekta sa consumers.
(Action must be continuous. When the executive takes positive steps, these should be followed by measures that strengthen supply chains, lower logistics costs, and protect consumers.)
"That is exactly what we are working on through the LEAD hearings and the proposed KALINGA bill,” the Speaker added.
Dy says that fuel price movements directly affect food prices, making coordination between the executive and legislature critical to ensuring that the benefits reach households.
“Kapag bumaba ang presyo ng diesel, may pagkakataon tayong pababain ang gastos sa transportasyon ng pagkain. The KALINGA bill strengthens this by supporting logistics, stabilizing essential goods supply, and ensuring priority fuel allocation for food and distribution chains,” he noted.
