'Sobrang init sa beat!': Nartatez orders protection of cops in beat patrol as heat index reaches dangerous levels
Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr., chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) reminded chiefs of police offices and unit commanders to strictly enforce measures intended to ensure the well-being of their personnel, especially those assigned in beat patrol, amid the scorching heat of the sun.
Nartatez said that while peace and order is a priority, police commanders must also ensure that their men are also protected from adverse effects of the heat index.
Currently, the country experiences intensified heat conditions amid the dry season. The heat index has reached dangerous levels in several areas, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
Heat index is what air temperature feels like to the human body when relative humidity is combined with the air temperature.
“I remind our police chiefs and heads of units to ensure that their men on the ground are getting their breaks while on duty to protect them from too much heat,” Nartatez said as he stressed the need for supervisors to ensure proper work pacing and adequate rest for personnel deployed outdoors.
“The Philippine National Police will make necessary adjustments that include implementation of rotations and heat breaks to ensure the welfare of our personnel on the ground, particularly those deployed for beat patrol and visibility,” he added.
He also underscored the importance of hydration as he reminded officers to drink water regularly and remain alert for signs of heat exhaustion.
Supervisors were also advised to monitor personnel closely, especially those assigned to traffic management and patrol duties under direct sunlight.
Nartatez further assured that the PNP national headquarters will provide necessary heat protection items for personnel on the ground, including gear and support equipment for men assigned on the field.
He also directed all police offices to continuously monitor heat index updates to allow units to adjust deployment strategies and prevent heat-related incidents.
