President Marcos lauded Filipinos for showing “bayanihan” or community spirit amid the ongoing oil crisis triggered by the conflict in the Middle East.
In his latest vlog, the President called on the public to embody unity and compassion as the country faces rising fuel costs and economic pressures.
“Gusto ko kayong saluduhan at pasalamatan (I want to salute and thank you),” he said, referring to Filipinos helping one another during the crisis.
“Ito ang panahon para ipakita at isabuhay ang inyong pagka-Pilipino (This is the time to show and live out what it means to be Filipino),” he added, linking it to the spirit of heroism commemorated during Araw ng Kagitingan.
According to the President, helping others during difficult times is a form of modern-day heroism.
“Sa panahon ng kagipitan, dapat ay mangibabaw ang ating pakikipagkapwa-tao (In times of hardship, compassion for others must prevail),” he said.
President Marcos lauded how many Filipinos continue to help one another, as he stressed that collective effort is key to overcoming challenges.
He cited businesses, private citizens, and communities organizing aid efforts such as community pantries and feeding programs.
Marcos also acknowledged those helping others without seeking recognition.
“Marami ring iba diyan ay hindi nagpo-post sa social media… tumutulong na lang (Many are not posting on social media… they simply help),” he said, describing this as the true spirit of being Filipino.
Condemns selfish acts
Marcos, however, expressed disappointment over incidents of selfish behavior during the crisis.
“Hindi ito nagpapahintulot sa atin na gumawa ng mga ganitong bagay (This does not justify doing such acts),” he said.
He cited cases of fuel theft, hoarding, and irresponsible behavior that put others at risk.
The President warned against hoarding fuel, especially by those who do not have a legitimate need.
“Yung mga may kaya, huwag kayong nagho-hoard ng diesel (Those who are more well-off, do not hoard diesel),” he said.
He clarified that only those with operational requirements—such as hospitals and fishermen—should store fuel.
Marcos also reminded the public not to endanger others in the process of securing fuel.
“Huwag niyo rin ilalagay sa panganib ang mga kapitbahay ninyo (Do not put your neighbors at risk),” he said.
He emphasized that personal gain should not come at the expense of others.
Gov’t efforts continue
The President assured the public that the government is doing everything it can to ease the burden caused by the crisis.
“Maasahan ninyo na kami sa pamahalaan ay hindi titigil sa paghahanap ng ginhawa (You can count on the government—we will not stop finding ways to provide relief),” he said.
Marcos, however, said government efforts alone will not be enough without public cooperation.
“Hindi ito magiging sapat kung wala ang tulong ng bawat isa (This will not be enough without everyone’s help),” he said.
The President urged Filipinos to work together and support one another during the crisis.
“Ipakita ninyo ang inyong pagka-Pinoy… magtulong-tulong tayo (Show your Filipino spirit… let us help each other),” he said.
