BACOLOD CITY – A 32-year-old suspected drug pusher who allegedly shot and killed an anti-illegal drug operative here on Friday, April 10, passed away in a hospital on Saturday, April 11.
Police Col. Eugene Rebadomia, Bacolod police director, confirmed that the suspect, whose name was withheld by authorities, passed away at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital (CLMMRH) here at 5:27 a.m.
However, Rebadomia said that only the suspect’s family can get a copy of the medical records on the cause of death.
The suspect shot and killed 43-year-old Police Master Sgt. Romulo Galvez Jr. during a buy-bust operation outside a motel in Barangay Singcang-Airport on April 9.
Rebadomia stressed that the suspect was immediately brought to the hospital after the inventory of the drug evidence, contrary to reports that he died inside the jail.
He said that it is standard operating procedure to bring a suspect to a hospital for medical examination before bringing him to a police station for custody.
Rebadomia added that police had body-worn cameras to support this.
He said that the suspect was confined to the hospital because he was unruly and aggressive and could not be examined at that time.
Rebadomia said the suspect was injured while grappling the firearm with police after the shooting.
“The suspect was strongly resisting, but the police did not use a firearm to subdue him as there was no intention to further harm anyone,” Rebadomia said.
He said that they have reached out to the suspect’s family to assess any assistance. But they have only talked to the live-in partner, and awaiting feedback from the suspect’s immediate family.
Rebadomia said that it is the right of the suspect’s family if they decide to press charges against the police for the death of their family member.
He said the suspect was reportedly notorious and had several complaints or offenses committed per records of the Bacolod City Police Office.
Rebadomia said BCPO personnel have low morale after the death of Galvez. “We did our part. I am praying this will not happen again to any of our personnel,” he added.
He said the Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR) following the incident emphasized the need to review basic life support training to enable personnel to know how to apply first aid in a similar situation. They were also told not to be complacent during any police operation.
