Manila urges public to wear face masks amid air quality monitoring
The Manila City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department is advising residents to wear face masks when going outside as a precautionary measure while air quality in the capital continues to be closely monitored.
Based on the Air Quality Index (AQI) readings under the city’s Hinga Maynila Program on April 12, monitoring stations at Anda Circle, Puregold Tayuman, San Sebastian Residences, and Sta. Ana Hospital recorded “Fair” air quality levels, indicating generally acceptable and safe conditions for the public.
City environment and public services data showed an improvement from the previous day, April 11, when Puregold Tayuman registered an “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” (UFSG) level at around 5:00 p.m.
Authorities attributed the temporary deterioration to thick smoke believed to have come from the ongoing fire at the Navotas Sanitary Landfill, which had affected air quality across parts of Metro Manila and nearby provinces. Conditions have since improved as of the latest monitoring.
Despite the generally fair air quality readings, the city government issued a precautionary advisory, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, senior citizens, pregnant women, and individuals with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, including asthma.
The city government continues to monitor air conditions in real time to ensure timely public updates and safeguard residents’ health and safety.
Residents are likewise urged to remain cautious, minimize unnecessary outdoor exposure, and continue practicing preventive measures such as wearing face masks when needed.
