Your best Mate is back, engineered to outlast, outshoot, outperform.
HUAWEI is re-introducing the Mate series to the country. It is a flagship device, through and through. 6.75-inch OLED X-True Display with a resolution of 2832x1280, 120Hz refresh rate, and 3000 nits of peak brightness. The battery sits at a comfortable 5750mAh and supports SuperCharge, allowing you to be on the go in the shortest time possible with 100W wired charging and 80W wireless charging. It’s powered with HUAWEI’s own Kirin 9030 Pro chipset, which translates to: This phone is very powerful.
However, this is a HUAWEI Mate, after all. You would expect HUAWEI to present and deliver the goods as they’ve always done, if not a little up and beyond. So, specs aside, one of the most compelling innovations of the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro is the camera.
Just when you think smartphone photography has already peaked, think again. HUAWEI’s True-to-Color Camera moves that goalpost much farther and proudly stands with it, chin held high. This optimizes every shot, ensuring the 50MP Ultra Lighting Camera, 48MP Ultra Lighting Macro Camera, and the 40MP Ultra Wide Angle camera to deliver true-to-life colors, whether in broad daylight or in challenging low-light conditions.
Allow us to share some photos we’ve taken over the past couple of days.

We cannot express enough how impressed we were with HUAWEI’s camera features. They captured every detail with surgical precision, with strong and vivid colors that felt natural and never overpowering. Shadows and the blacks were deep and created strong impressions. We expected nothing less from HUAWEI, as our past reviews of the Mate, P, and Pura series have had nothing but high remarks for photography.
The macro shots made us whistled, by how it managed to highlight the littlest details there are within images.
Other camera features include AI Composition, where the built-in AI optimizes the image for colors and angle. This is for people who simply want to take pictures without going deep into the technical settings, and simply want to take stunning pictures. Do not fret, the camera has Pro settings, where you can manually tune the ISO, white balance, aperture, exposure, and so on.
AI Remove allows the removal of unwanted background objects. The AI will generate details to fill in the gaps based on the surroundings and environment. AI Best Expression, as the name suggests, ensures everyone in the group photo is looking at their best. No one will be blinking, caught mid-sneeze, or looking at something else entirely.
Of course, photography is one of the key details of this HUAWEI phone. Another is the durability. When Kunlun Glass was first introduced to us a few years ago, it was done so with confidence as a testament of innovation. This would be the HUAWEI Mate 50. This device was dropped right in front of us multiple times on a solid floor. Every drop was both waist and chest high, and every time it clacked on the floor, the MB Tech team indeed winced and flinched. I think anyone would. But every drop of that HUAWEI device emerged unscathed.
And so, the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro equipped with a second generation Kunlun Glass, that testament of durability still holds true. We’ve dropped this device a number of times, even screen first, and every time we picked it up, it came back without a single scratch, as if goading us for another series of drop tests.
At some point, we had to stop drop testing it, because we didn’t want to push it. It will break eventually. But the abnormal amount of times we’ve already tried it, has already proven a point that the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro can carry you to extremes. You need to go hiking and want to capture the sunset up in the mountain? Yes, the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro can and will survive the accidental drops.
The HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro has multiple water resistances. IP68 will survive submersion in clear water down to six meters.
IP69 makes it resistant to water pressure and temperatures of 80-degree celsius, making it resistant to hot environments–perfect for this summer heat.
It is also freeze resistant up to -20-degree celsius. Suffice to say, negative degrees make it very cold. If you’re thinking Baguio cold. Think colder, much, much colder.
HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro was built to endure, engineered to ensure.
Personally, the camera and durability are impressive for sure. But what struck me is the design of the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro. It looks simple, a well-designed device. We have had a HUAWEI Mate 20 Pro in the past, and got it as a personal device in 2018. That device has been passed down from one family member to the other, and it has been dropped multiple times, and the screen survived with minor bruises and scratches. It remains a speedy performer and battery, while worn down slightly, continues to outperform some devices.
The Mate 80 Pro feels like a natural evolution of that line. It has that distinct identity of a Mate device. This means, looking simple and beautiful.
HUAWEI touts the front camera by having a 3D TOF camera setup. HUAWEI boasts this would provide facial recognition that rivals financial-grade security that unlocks the Mate 80 Pro in one second, ensuring your device won’t be accessible to unauthorized users.
If you’re worried about app selection, then you have nothing to worry about. HUAWEI’s AppGallery continues to expand and evolve. You can download GCash, Angkas, and social media apps, and every other app you’d need for the HUAWEI Mate 80 Pro to become your daily driver.
The return of the Mate series signals that HUAWEI has not stopped innovating, using the Mate series’ past as a launchpad to deliver new experiences.
