It is no surprise that you’re seeing so many Stargazers on the road these days. For a first-generation model, this MPV surprisingly meets a number of mobility metrics that matter to Filipinos. Let me explain.
While most vehicles start the battle for your attention with their looks, the winner still comes in second behind the Stargazer’s one-of-a-kind design. Ironically, these same exterior features met harsh criticism when it hit the dealerships in 2023, but with over 10,000 units sold in the last two years (2024-2025), I’d say there’s been a change of heart.
Styling
Hyundai matches the MPV’s flashy appearance with modern lighting (multi-faceted and automatic LED headlamps, LED daytime running lamps, garnish lamps, and rear combination lamps). But what makes the X variants stand out from the GLS and GL is the prominent bridge-type roof rails, which raise its style and utilitarian features a few notches higher. Plus, the blacked-out geometric 17-inch alloy wheels complement the Dragon Red body color. In a segment dominated by boxy vehicles, the Stargazer is a refreshing (and youthful) take on what a seven-seater should look like.
Updated interior
When the Stargazer came out three years ago, Filipinos complained about the outdated cockpit. The facelift last year changed all that. Without having to reshape the old dashboard, Hyundai added necessary elements such as spacious ledges and holders for small and loose items, and a soft topper to give it a more premium feel. It features two 10.25-inch screens. In front of the driver is a colored instrument cluster, and to the right is the touchscreen audio display featuring wireless CarPlay, a voice recognition system, two USB ports (Type-A and C), and six speakers. My only complaint is that the speakers were faint, especially during voice calls. The cabin wasn’t noisy, but it was difficult to hear the person on the other line. Worse, there was no way to increase the audio level from the Bluetooth connection. Most infotainment systems I’ve used have a way of turning this up.
Cabin and conveniences
At only P1.378 million, I was expecting fabric upholstery, so it was good to see that it uses leatherette with visible stitching for a more upmarket feel. In the middle of the chic black cabin are 60:40 split-folding seats that are less bolstered but come with two USB-C ports and horizontal overhead vents with manual temperature control. The third row can have more leg room by sliding the second row forward, but it is built to accommodate only two people. The only amenities here are versatile holders on either side.
Cabin occupants, including the driver, will appreciate plenty of other convenience features. It has a passive keyless entry system, push-button ignition, an electronic parking brake, a touch panel climate control system, a wireless charging pad, and even a seatback table (behind the front passenger only).
Power
Like rivals in the segment, the Stargazer is powered by a 1.5-liter gasoline engine that sends 115-PS and 144-Nm of torque to the front wheels via an Intelligent Variable Transmission. The meager numbers don’t do justice to this test drive unit’s performance. Even on Eco mode, it delivered an engaging and reactive drive that made one of my really long drives (152-km.) during that week actually exciting. Because of the engine’s low displacement, putting more pressure on the throttle than what’s needed pushes the revs over 2,000 RPM. Fortunately, it didn’t strain as badly as others I’ve tested. After seven days, it returned 15.4 km/l.
Handling
Steering felt light, just like the way this Stargazer accelerated, which made maneuvering easy. The MacPherson strut (front) and coupled torsion beam axle worked wonderfully. The ride was smooth regardless of the road conditions, and it is a huge plus for dads looking for a family vehicle. It is also the only Stargazer variant with Hyundai Smartsense, which features Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Forward Collision Avoidance Assist, Lane Following Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Blind Spot Collision Avoidance Assist.
There is room for improvement in a few areas, but with a great price, awesome family features, and outstanding efficiency, it is easy to see why the 2026 Hyundai Stargazer X GLS Premium IVT is now one of the top MPVs in the country.
