The supporters as well as the legal team of Vice President Sara Duterte are just "wasting paper" at this point.
House Committee on Justice member, Bicol Saro Party-list Rep. Terry Ridon gave this retort on Friday night, April 10 on the fresh petition filed before the Supreme Court (SC) to halt the impeachment proceedings against the second highest official of the land.
“Nagsasayang ng papel ang petitioners na alyado ni Vice President Sara Duterte. Wala silang bagong sinabi na hindi binanggit ng unang dalawang petisyon (The petitioners allied with Vice President Sara Duterte are wasting paper. They have said nothing new beyond what was already raised in the first two petitions),” Ridon said.
The two anti-impeachment filings that the lawyer-legislator was referring to were the one filed last month by lawyer Israelito Torreon and another filed earlier this week by the Duterte camp itself.
"Sila mismo ang nagsasabi na sinusuportahan nila nang buo ang petition nina Atty. Torreon (They themselves are saying that they fully support the petition of Atty. Torreon)," Ridon said.
"Dapat ibasura agad ng Korte Suprema ang isang petisyon pawang pagsawsaw lang sa isang kaso na hindi naman sila talaga kasali (The SC should immediately dismiss a petition that is merely meddling in a case they are not truly part of)," added the party-list lawmaker.
Earlier Friday, lawyers Jerryl Rondez-Layog and James Reserva, along with former Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) commissioner Ronald Adamat and representatives of the One Bangsamoro Movement led by Maulana “Alan” Balangi, filed a third petition in the attempt to stop the justice committee's impeachment proceedings.
Like the first two, the latest petition cited technicalities as reason for the high court to grant its prayer. But Ridon believes these will be all for naught.
“Kahit ano pang gawin ng mga alyado ng Pangalawang Pangulo, tuloy ang pagdinig sa April 14 (The hearing on April 14 will push through, whatever the allies of the Vice President do)," he said.
The SC has yet to issue any temporary restraining order (TRO) on the impeachment proceedings; however, it has consolidated the first two petitions.
'Dilatory tactic'
Another justice panel member, Manila 3rd district Rep. Joel Chua, brushed off rhe Duterte camp's SC petition as nothing more than a "clear dilatory tactic".
Chua, a lawyer like Ridon, says there is “no legal basis” for the high court to issue a TRO.
The Manila solon has underscored that the impeachment process remains “constitutional, legal, evidence-based, and fair". “The House is strictly following due process under the Constitution and House rules,” he said.
At the same time, Chua questioned Vice President Duterte's penchant for seek judicial intervention instead of addressing the allegations head-on at the House of Representatives.
“Bakit sa Kamara ayaw sumagot, pero sa Korte Suprema tuloy-tuloy ang paghahain ng petisyon para pigilan ang proseso? (Why is it that in the House they refuse to answer, but in the SC they keep filing petitions to block the process?)" he asked.
“Tama na ang dilatory tactics at mga palusot. Impeachment is moving forward—walang legal na dahilan para ito’y pigilan (Enough with the dilatory tactics and excuses. Impeachment is moving forward—there is no legal reason to stop it)," he added.
