Another chapter of the storied ‘Manila Clasico’ opens in the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup as the Hotshots and the Kings lock horns at the Mall of Asia Arena on Friday, April 10.
Tip-off of the clash is at 7:30 p.m. and will come after the intriguing battle between independent teams, the undefeated Rain or Shine and the struggling Converge in the first offering at 5:15 p.m,.
Tenorio, whose squad is raring to even its record after a 0-3 start, is refusing to get carried away by the drama surrounding the big clash, taking the contest as like any other game they need to prepare for and win.
“We’ll be ready not because it’s Ginebra, and Manila Clasico, but because we need to get ready because we’re still below .500 in the standings,” said Tenorio, who will figure in another mentee vs mentor matchup with his former coach Tim Cone.
“I know Ginebra will be ready after the bad loss last game. I know coach Tim, he’s gonna make his team ready going into Friday’s game,” he added.
Having played for the Kings for most of his career, Tenorio is very well familiar with Ginebra’s Never-Say-Die mantra and their eagerness to bounce back after a tough loss.
Ginebra is coming off a sorry 82-85 loss to San Miguel, wasting a huge 31-point effort from Justin Brownlee.
Magnolia, on the other hand, is finally getting their groove stringing together two-straight wins after tapping new import Clint Chapman.
Meanwhile in the first offering, the Elasto Painters are aiming to extend their franchise-best start when they seek their sixth win against the FiberXers.
ROS head coach Yeng Guiao isn’t taking Converge for granted, however, stressing that its 1-4 record doesn’t really reflect their team.
“So mabigat na kalaban yung Converge. I think yung 1-4 record nila does not reflect how strong they are. Parang naghihintay lang ng tamang panahon, pagka nag-gel sila, mahirap talaga talunin yan,” Guiao commented.
More than keeping their streak going, however, ROS is also wanting a victory as celebration for the jersey retirement of Gabe Norwood to be held in the halftime of the contest.
