DAVAO CITY – The Davao Light and Power Co. assured people on Wednesday, April 8, that power supply in Mindanao remains stable.
Speaking at the Davao Peace and Security Press Corps media briefing at The Royal Mandaya Hotel, DLPC reputation management manager Fermin Edillon said Mindanao has sufficient electricity supply with excess power.
"Let us be clear. We really have enough power supply here in Mindanao. In fact, Mindanao even supplies electricity to some parts of the Visayas region due to the country's interconnected grid," Edillon said.
He added that the company maintains bilateral contracts with local power plants, sources renewable energy, and procures power from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market to ensure reliable service.
Edillon urged consumers to conserve energy, especially during the humid summer months when electricity demand typically rises. "If we manage our consumption, we can help minimize the impact on our electricity expenses."
The DLPC said a possible electricity rate adjustment may take effect on April 15 or 16 due to fluctuations in fuel prices influenced by the Middle East crisis and the impact would likely be minimal.
"Whatever electricity we purchase, we simply pass it on to customers. What you're paying Davao Light for is the delivery of electricity," he said and assured that the company monitors market rates and shifts to generator sets when economically viable.
Edillon said the nationwide suspension of the WESM by the Energy Regulatory Commission on March 26 was primarily a market intervention to regulate high power rates amid a supply shortage.
"Properly managing your electricity usage is the best way to avoid higher expenses," Edillon stressed, adding that claims of rotational brownouts circulating on social media are unfounded and encouraged consumers to check DLPC’s official website.
