'Welcome aboard, mates!' Australian Navy warship in PH for goodwill visit

The Philippine Navy (PN) received a visiting Royal Australian Navy (RAN) warship at its headquarters in Manila on Tuesday, April 7, as Manila and Canberra continue to enhance its growing defense ties amid shared security concerns in the region.
HMAS Toowoomba (FFH 156), an Anzac-class frigate led by Commander Alicia Harrison, dropped anchor in Manila and was welcomed by the PN, represented by Captain Laurence Calimag, deputy commander of the Littoral Combat Force of the Philippine Fleet.
According to Captain Marie Angelica Sisican, director of PN public affairs office, both sides “discussed matters of mutual interest” and RAN’s port call will include a subject matter expert exchange (SMEE) to be hosted by the Australian troops.
This would provide an opportunity for personnel from both navies to share professional expertise, enhance operational knowledge, and strengthen collaborative practices, Sisican noted.
Australia has been a key defense partner of the Philippines and their cooperation has grown in recent years through joint exercises, training exchanges, and high-level engagements.
The PN said such efforts aim to improve interoperability and readiness in responding to regional challenges.
Manila continues to expand maritime cooperation with allies amid escalating tensions in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) due to Chinese activities.
Sisican said the engagement “underscores the commitment of the Philippine Navy and the Royal Australian Navy to deepen bilateral relations, promote mutual understanding, and advance maritime security cooperation in the region.”
