Far Eastern University kept its composure and survived a tough challenge from De La Salle, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-21, to solidify its hold of the top spot in the UAAP Season 88 men’s volleyball tournament at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City Wednesday, April 8.
Though already in the semifinals, the Tamaraws showed relentless grit as Mikko Espartero and Charles Absin sparked a furious comeback highlighted by a 6-2 blitz that erased an 18-19 deficit, dashing the surging Green Archers’ bid to force a decider.
The win hiked FEU’s tally to 10-1, while La Salle dropped to 5-6 at fifth to put his Final Four hopes in peril.
FEU coach Eddieson Orcullo was thankful that his players were able to bounce back from unforced errors.
“Yung team standing, hindi na talaga yun yung goal. Siguro yung each game, dun talaga magma-matter yung gusto naming mangyari,” he said, emphasizing that their focus is on performing well in each match rather than the overall standings.
Espartero led the Tamaraws with 14 points off 13 spikes and one ace, while Amet Bituin and Dryx Saavedra chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively. Lirick Mendoza, Luis Miguel and Absin combined for 22 points.
Uriel Mendoza carried the fight for La Salle with 18 points, but was not enough.
Meanwhile, Ateneo survived University of the Philippines in their “Battle of Katipunan”, 25-23, 22-25, 23-25, 25-18, 15-7, to seize solo fourth with 6-5.
Amil Pacinio delivered timely hits on his way to erupting for 25 points off 20 attacks, three blocks and two aces, while Emmanuel Okeje and skipper Jian Salarzon contributed 16 and 13 points, respectively.
The Maroons fell to their eighth defeat against three wins despite Olayemi Raheem scoring 28 points.
