Authorities have widened their investigation into a suspected illegal fuel trading operation uncovered at the Navotas Fish Port Complex, where nine individuals were arrested, and a large volume of diesel was seized.
The operation, conducted on Tuesday, April 8, by the Philippine National Police (PNP) in coordination with the Department of Energy (DOE), stemmed from a tip about unauthorized fuel distribution activities in the area.
According to the Navotas City Police Station, nine Filipino males, aged 21 to 57 and working as drivers, helpers, and a vessel captain, were apprehended after failing to present the required permits and documents for transporting and distributing fuel.
Recovered during the operation were a fuel tanker carrying about 15,000 liters of diesel and a cargo vessel believed to have been used as a makeshift depot containing an estimated 50,000 liters more. Authorities also seized fuel hoses and pumping equipment used in the transfer of petroleum products.
In total, around 65,000 liters of diesel valued at about P9.75 million were confiscated.
The suspects are now under police custody and are facing charges for violating laws regulating the sale and distribution of petroleum products.
Authorities said coordination is ongoing with the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the PNP Maritime Group to trace the source of the fuel and identify other individuals who may be involved.
The PNP added that further operations are expected as part of intensified efforts to curb illegal fuel trading, particularly in coastal and port areas like Navotas.
