Over 716,000 commuters benefit from Manila's Libreng Sakay program
Since its launch on March 30, Manila’s Libreng Sakay program has assisted 716,659 commuters, providing much-needed relief to thousands navigating the city’s daily transport challenges.
In a bid to further support participating drivers, Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso increased the payout for more than 1,000 drivers, raising it from P3,000 to P3,500, and eventually to P4,000 on April 7.
City officials said the program’s strong turnout underscores the continuing demand for accessible and affordable public transportation in Manila, especially as commuters grapple with rising fuel prices and fare costs.
The local government is now assessing whether the program can be extended beyond its initial run, taking into consideration recent global developments, including the temporary ceasefire in the US-Iran conflict, which could influence fuel prices and transport conditions.
“The Libreng Sakay program demonstrates the city’s commitment to immediate, practical support for both drivers and commuters,” an official said.
Since its inception, Libreng Sakay has provided thousands of residents with free rides across key routes in Manila, helping ease the financial burden on daily commuters while ensuring smoother traffic flow.
