The Philippine boxing team’s campaign in the Asian Boxing Elite Championships came to an end on Tuesday, April 7, after last remaining bet John Wayne Vicera fell in the semifinals in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
Vicera yielded a unanimous 5-0 decision to Japan’s Iwai Daichi, settling for the bronze medal in the men’s 50kg division.
One judge scored it a dominant 30-26 for the Japanese bet, while officials from Bulgaria and Estonia turned in identical 30-27 cards. The Italian judge saw it 29-27, and the Moroccan judge had it closer at 29-28.
Prior to the loss, Vicera dominated his rivals with unanimous 5-0 victories over Bhutan’s Migma Dorji and Mongolia’s Battulga Aldarkhishig.
Earlier, teammates Norlan Petecio, Aaron Jude Bado and Paul Julyfer Bascon bowed out in the opening round of their respective weight classes, while Xian Baguhin exited in the quarterfinals of the women’s 51kg division.
