La Salle survives Lady Tams' scare to stay unscathed

Amie Provido and Shane Reterta rose to the occasion in the fifth set, while Angel Canino unleashed the finishing blow as De La Salle outdueled Far Eastern University, 25-17, 25-22, 23-25, 19-25, 15-10, to remain unbeaten in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament Wednesday evening, April 8, at Mall of Asia Arena.
After squandering a 2-0 set lead and losing momentum in the next two frames, the Lady Spikers bounced back in the decider as Provido orchestrated an early 8-4 run that followed by timely hits from Reterta, Shevana Laput, and Canino to spoil the Lady Tamaraws’ late rally that near the gap to 12-9.
The victory marked La Salle’s 11th straight to keep its spot at the top of the standings, while FEU, despite Petallo’s brilliant return, fell to fifth spot with a 6-5 card and tied with Adamson.
Aside from sweeping the Lady Tams and assured for a twice-to-beat advantage, the Lady Spikers moved three wins away from earning an outright Finals berth.
Canino delivered a triple-double performance, erupting for 24 points on top of 13 digs and 10 receptions.
“‘Tong match na ‘to sobrang grateful kami kasi naipanalo namin, pero kailangan talaga naming tignan kung ano ‘yong nangyari sa game na ‘to. ‘Di lang results, kasi ang daming lapses na as a team na pwede namang maiwasan,” said Canino.
Laput, likewise, exploded for 23 points on 18 attacks, four blocks and one ace, while Provido unloaded 16 points.
“This second round, ‘di talaga magiging madali for us. ‘Yong fifth set kanina, parang test of character ‘yon para samin, and I’m very happy sa pinakita ng lahat,” said Provido.
“Naipanalo namin ‘yong fifth set, pinatunayan lang namin ‘yong makakaya namin, and ‘yon nga ‘di pa tapos ang laban, kailangan namin maging focus sa mga susunod na games,” she added.
Lovely Lopez posted 16 points along with 24 receptions, while Petallo added 14 points in a losing effort for FEU.
Faida Bakanke was limited to 10 points, Cla Loresco added seven points, and Tin Ubaldo collected nine points, two digs, two receptions, and 11 excellent sets as the Lady Tamaraws need to win their three remaining games to realize their semis hopes.
