'Building a nation of innovators': Pisay positions scholars as future science workforce

This is how the Philippine Science High School (PSHS) system underscored its role in developing future scientists and innovators as it released the results of the National Competitive Examination (NCE) for School Year 2026–2027.
Out of 27,965 applicants nationwide, PSHS named 1,738 principal qualifiers for its scholarship program, with 1,920 total slots available across its 16 campuses.
Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. described the NCE as more than an entrance examination, framing it as part of a broader effort to build the country’s pool of science and technology talent.
“The National Competitive Examination is not simply an entrance test to Pisay. [It] is a deliberate investment in the future of our nation. We identify and nurture young individuals who will one day help solve some of the country's most pressing challenges,” Solidum said.
He added that students admitted to the PSHS system undergo an extensive curriculum designed to strengthen competencies in science, mathematics, and related fields, along with exposure to integrated subjects such as engineering, technology, and arts drafting.
PSHS Executive Director Ronalee Orteza said scholars are also given opportunities beyond the classroom, including participation in national and international competitions and immersive science training programs.
“They will have the opportunity to participate in national and international competitions. They will also have the immersive training experience during science immersion program and other opportunities,” Orteza said.
She noted that the PSHS selection process is designed to identify students with balanced capabilities across mathematics, science, verbal ability, and abstract reasoning, rather than specialization in a single area.
“Kailangang pumasa ng bata doon sa cut-off na iyon. We do not want a kid [that is] only good in science, math, or abstract reasoning. We want someone who is [holistically knowledgeable] para kaya iyong curriculum namin,” she said.
Under the program, qualified students are entitled to full scholarship benefits, including stipends of up to ₱8,000 depending on family income, free textbooks, uniforms, transportation allowances, and subsidized dormitory accommodation.
PSHS officials said these provisions are intended to support students throughout their studies and enable them to focus on developing the skills needed for future roles in science and technology sectors.
Sahagun, a PSHS alumna and Department of Science and Technology undersecretary, said graduates of the institution are equipped to pursue opportunities in advanced education and contribute to national development.
“Maganda po ang hinaharap ng aming mga Pisay graduates. Ito ang pinakamagandang secondary science education sa ating bansa. Kaya po malaki po ang maaaring maibigay sa ating lahat ng mga estudyanteng makakapasok (Pisay graduates have a bright future ahead. This is the best secondary science education in our country. That is why the students who will be able to get in have a lot to offer to all of us),” she said.
