12,600 tricycle drivers in Pangasinan get cash relief assistance

MALASIQUI, Pangasinan – A total of 12,625 tricycle drivers from the four cities of Pangasinan received P5,000 cash relief assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) on Wednesday to cushion the impact of soaring oil prices amid the Middle East conflict.
DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian led the distribution and said the initial beneficiaries in the province are part of the total 367,000 tricycle drivers outside Metro Manila.
There are 4,258 beneficiaries from Alaminos City, 2,493 in Dagupan City, 4,218 in Urdaneta City, and 1,656 in San Carlos City.
"First of all, I want you to know that you are on top of the mind of the national government under the leadership of the President. No driver will be left behind," Gatchalian said.
He reminded the drivers that the payout has a schedule and that they should check their names on the list.
"If your name is not on the list, you can talk to your local government unit. You can ask your local authority because they are the ones giving the list to the DSWD," he said. "We started in the cities, then we will go out to the municipalities."
Gatchalian said next in line to get aid are the jeepney, taxi, bus, UV Express, and transport network vehicle services drivers.
Meanwhile, Gatchalian said the agency is eyeing a shift to digital payouts.
"There are financial service providers meeting with the department because our goal for the next round is to use a digital platform for drivers and riders who have e-wallets," he said.
The first round of payouts was done manually to make sure that drivers are verified and validated.
He said the payout for the public utility vehicle drivers will continue until April 30 this year.
"On or before April 30, we're done with all the sectors assigned to the DSWD," he said.
Ernesto Fabro, 66, tricycle driver from Urdaneta City, thanked the national government for the aid.
"This is a big help since I stopped with my livelihood because of the high fuel prices," he said.
Charlotte Gutierrez, 46, a single mom who works as a tricycle driver from Nancamaliran, Urdaneta City, got emotional as she recounted the effect of the fuel price surge on her livelihood.
"I used to earn P600 daily but now I only earn around P100 to P200 daily. So, it is really hard for us drivers nowadays. I am grateful to the DSWD for this," she said.
She said she would make use of the money for the maintenance of her tricycle and for their food. (PNA)
