As the Final Four race intensifies, the Lady Spikers, already assured of a spot in the semis, aim to sweep the elimination round and clinch an outright finals berth which they had achieved in the past years.
With all competing squads benefiting from a week-long break, La Salle eyes its 11th win in its 3 p.m. collision against FEU (6-4), whose remaining games are crucial to their semifinal bid. The same holds true for University of the Philippines (4-6) when it faces Ateneo (1-9) at 1 p.m.
A victory for the Lady Spikers could pull them closer for a finals ticket. On the other hand, a Lady Tamaraws victory would make the semis hunt tighter as they are only a game behind host University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses (7-4) for third spot.
Reigning champion National University (8-3) currently sits at No. 2, while Adamson (6-5) waits for one of them to stumble for it to strengthen its semis hopes.
La Salle kicked off its redemption campaign last February with a dominant straight-sets win over FEU in the opener. There, Canino and Shevana Laput were candid about their intentions of bringing back the crown at Taft.
“Before kasi medyo on words and not on actions, ngayon kasi pinapatunayan talaga namin na kaya rin namin talagang sumabay at kayang-kaya namin i-dominate ‘tong UAAP,” said Canino.
“Talagang malaki lang din talaga yung hugot namin ngayong season na ‘to na gusto namin matapos yung season na to na maganda, which is makuha namin yung ultimate goal namin na mag-champion,” she added.
Both star players of the De La Salle-Zobel under FEU coach Tina Salak back then, skippers Canino and Petallo, who recently cleared from right shoulder injury, lead the charge of their respective squads with Laput, Amie Provido, Shane Reterta, Lilay Del Castillo and Eshana Nunag also bannering the Lady Spikers.
The Lady Tamaraws, who are motivated to bounce back from their four-set loss to the Tigresses, lean on Faida Bakanke, Lovely Lopez, Aly Devosora, Cla Loresco, Jaz Ellarina, and Tin Ubaldo.
Meanwhile, the Casiey Dongallo-less Fighting Maroons aim for a rebound victory that would keep their semis drive on and deal the Blue Eagles their fourth consecutive defeat in the second installment of ‘Battle of Katipunan’ this edition.
Niña Ytang, Kianne Olango, and Jelai Gajero anchor the State U, while Zel Tsunashima, Jihan Chuatico, Dona De Leon, Ana Hermosura, and Zey Pacia power the Sergio Veloso-mentored crew.
In men’s action, FEU (9-1) is out to spoil La Salle’s (5-5) semis bid in their 11 a.m. collision, while Ateneo (5-5) and UP (3-7) try to save their respective campaigns as both schools go for a crucial win in their contest at 9 a.m.
