Super Junior's Ryeowook explains side about concert accident that injured fans
Ryeowook, a member of K-pop boy band Super Junior, issued a statement regarding the accident that injured three fans at their Seoul concert on April 5.
The “Super Show 10” SJ-Core in Seoul concert was held at the KSPO Dome.
A video showed that during Super Junior’s "Too Many Beautiful Girls" performance, member Ryeowook was seen greeting fans when a safety fence collapsed, causing people to fall.
SM Entertainment, Super Junior’s agency, said three fans were injured in the accident and were taken to a hospital for treatment. They suffered sprains and contusions.
Ryeowook took to Instagram to say that he felt extreme guilt the moment the accident happened.
“First of all, I wanted to explain to ELFs [Super Junior fans] what happened recently. As soon as the accident occurred, I felt so much guilt for the fans who were injured,” he said.
He added, “I thought that the fans got hurt because of me, and I wondered if it was because I got too close to them. Couldn't I have somehow caught them at the moment they fell? My thought process briefly stopped due to so much regret and shock.”
“I'm not someone whose mind works that fast, so stopping for a moment due to the shock made me feel so foolish. I apologize if that looked bad to you,” he said.
In the video, when the fans fell, Ryeowook held his head in shock.
“However, I am truly grateful to the countless ELFs who know me well for understanding and explaining the situation to me,” he said.
Ryeowook said he went to the hospital to talk to the injured fans.
“Also, I talked a lot with the injured fans at the hospital. I don't think I will ever forget how they worried about me even while in pain, and how they cried, saying they were even more sorry than I was,” he said.
He added, “Having been active for over 20 years since my debut, this is the first time I've witnessed an accident like this right before my eyes, so honestly, it was very difficult for me emotionally. I am so, so grateful that they weren't seriously injured.”..
“Thank you to the ELFs for worrying about me and comforting me. And above all, since we have to keep meeting our ELFs in the future, we will become a Super Junior that is even more careful and attentive to safety. Let's meet safely for a long time without anyone getting hurt,” he said.
In its statement, SM Entertainment said, ““During the final encore performance of the day, safety fences installed collapsed, causing three audience to fall and sustain injuries. The injured individuals were immediately transported to a hospital, where they received necessary examinations and treatment. Medical professionals have advised that they will require approximately two weeks of rest and treatment for sprains and contusions.”
It added, “We sincerely apologize to those who were injured and to their families. We will provide full support for their treatment and do our utmost to ensure their complete recovery. As the concert organizer, we deeply acknowledge our responsibility for this incident. We will thoroughly review and reinforce our safety measures and audience management protocols to prevent any recurrence of such incidents in the future. Once again, we truly apologize to those who were injured and to all audience for the concern and distress caused by this unexpected incident.”
