As rising fuel prices and broader economic uncertainties weigh on travel costs, the Department of Tourism (DOT) is encouraging Filipinos to rethink how they explore—shifting from long-distance trips to more accessible, value-driven experiences closer to home.

In a recent advisory, DOT emphasized that the country “remains open for business and tourism,” while acknowledging the financial pressures currently affecting both travelers and the industry.

Tourism, the agency said, continues to be a critical source of livelihood for millions of Filipinos, supporting local businesses, workers, and communities nationwide.

Instead of traditional, cost-heavy trips, the DOT is promoting alternatives that are more flexible and budget-conscious. These include walking and biking tours, farm visits, community-based tourism activities, and staycations within nearby areas.

The agency also highlighted wellness and nature escapes, as well as food-focused experiences that allow travelers to immerse themselves in local culture while managing expenses.

“These alternatives provide flexible ways to rest and travel meaningfully, depending on individual priorities and resources,” the DOT said.

Beyond affordability, the DOT underscored the role of tourism in sustaining micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), urging travelers to support local products and services.

By choosing community-based experiences and local destinations, travelers can help circulate income within smaller economies that rely heavily on tourism activity.

For those who still plan to travel longer distances, the DOT advised making arrangements in advance and opting for accredited tourism enterprises to ensure quality, safety, and reliability.

The agency maintains a list of accredited establishments and service providers through its official tourism platforms.

Alongside cost-conscious planning, the DOT reiterated the importance of responsible and respectful travel practices.

Travelers are encouraged to be mindful of local customs, reduce energy consumption, and opt for sustainable transport and eco-friendly accommodations. Simple measures—such as turning off lights, air conditioning units, and appliances when not in use—can help minimize environmental impact.
