50 suffer allergies after eating 'tulingan' in Cadiz City

BACOLOD CITY – Fifty persons suffered allergies after eating “aloy” or “tulingan” in Cadiz City on Monday, April 6.
The City Health Office (CHO) urged the public to temporarily refrain from eating tulingan following the incident.
Initial investigation said that the victims experienced rashes, itching, flushing, and breathing difficulty, consistent with histamine fish poisoning, which may occur when fish is not properly handled or stored at appropriate temperatures after catching.
City Health Officer Dr. Maria Victoria Ibañez said that five patients suffered life-threatening conditions, including two who were admitted to a hospital, and three others now in stable condition.
Ibañez said the remaining patients were discharged after their symptoms were managed by medication.
The CHO said that the fish came from Iloilo and were transported to Cadiz City for processing as dried fish. These fish were later sold in the local market for a low price, attracting buyers.
The CHO and the City Agriculture Office have collected fish samples and submitted them for toxicological examination to determine the exact cause of the incident.
The city government is closely monitoring with concerned agencies to trace the source of the fish and ensure that proper food safety standards are observed.
Residents were advised to purchase fish and seafood from reputable and properly regulated vendors, ensure that fish is fresh, properly stored, and adequately cooked, and immediately seek medical attention if symptoms such as rashes, dizziness, or difficulty in breathing occur after food consumption.
The city government assured the public that all necessary measures are being undertaken to safeguard public health and prevent similar incidents in the future.
