Young men aged 22 to 24- - -many without helmets- - -accounted for most of the 1,091 road crash injuries recorded by the Department of Health (DOH) from March 29 to April 2.
DOH spokesperson Dr. Albert Domingo said the figures do not yet include cases recorded on Good Friday and Black Saturday, when travel is expected to peak.
Hindi pa sumasama ang Biyernes Santo at Sabado de Gloria (Road crash injuries or collisions have reached 1,091 from March 29 to April 2 this Holy Week. This does not yet include Good Friday and Black Saturday),” he said during a radio interview on Sunday, March 5.
The health department warned that many of the injuries were linked to risky behavior, including riding without helmets, not wearing seatbelts, and drunk driving- - -factors he said could lead to preventable deaths.
Many are now heading home and we are more concerned about those not wearing helmets, not using seatbelts, or those who are drinking and driving because deaths from road crashes can be prevented),” he said.
Domingo said DOH data showed that most of those involved in road crashes during the period were young male adults.
In fact, not to scare anyone, but if I were someone who has a loved one waiting for them to come home, I would send them a text, especially those riding motorcycles and males aged 22 to 24),” he said.
Because based on the data we are seeing, most of those involved in crashes during this Holy Week are young men, not minors but adult males aged 22 to 24, who were not wearing helmets, and some had been drinking),” he added.
DOH urged the public to remind relatives and friends who are traveling to follow road safety measures.
“Kung mayroon ho kayong kilala na alam niyong babyahe ngayon i-text niyo at kulitin niyo sabihin niyo magsuot ng helmet at ‘wag uminom (If you know someone who will be traveling, text them and keep reminding them to wear a helmet and not to drink),” said Domingo.
