ILOILO CITY – Suspected shabu was discovered in a bundle of kangkong (water spinach) in a district jail in Kalibo, the provincial capital of Aklan province, on Easter Sunday.
Authorities found the contraband from a 17-year-old boy delivering ingredients for sinigang (Filipino sour soup) during an inspection at the Aklan District Jail. Four sachets of shabu wrapped around the vegetable were recovered.
The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) informed the Kalibo Municipal Police Station (MPS) about the discovery.
“Since he was a minor, he was not arrested,” said Police Capt. Aubrey Ayon, information officer of the Aklan Police Provincial Office.
Ayon said that the Kalibo MPS turned over the boy to the Kalibo Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO). He was taken to the Lezo MSWDO as he is a resident of Lezo.
The boy denied knowledge of the illegal drugs. He told authorities he only accompanied another individual in delivering the ingredients but his companion allegedly fled.
The BJMP is conducting further investigation to identify the recipient while the Kalibo MPS is determining if the boy will face charges.
