5.1-magnitude quake shakes Cebu, Leyte, nearby provinces
Epicenter of the 5.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Cebu on April 6, 2026 (Phivolcs)
A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck at 3:22 p.m. on Monday, April 6, with its epicenter located 12 kilometers southeast of Bogo City, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The tectonic quake, initially reported as magnitude 5.4, originated at a shallow depth of 11 kilometers.
Phivolcs has yet to confirm whether the tremor is an aftershock of the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that hit northern Cebu on September 30, 2025, which was followed by a series of aftershocks in the region.
The tremor was felt at:
* Intensity V (strong) – Bogo City and Medellin, Cebu
* Intensity IV (moderately strong) – Sogod, Cebu; Villaba, Leyte
* Intensity III (weak) – Bantayan, Liloan, City of Toledo, and Tudela, Cebu; Cebu City; Mandaue City
* Intensity II (slightly felt) – Inabanga, Bohol; Argao and Talisay City, Cebu
* Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) – Badian and San Fernando, Cebu
Phivolcs’ instrumental intensities were also recorded as follows:
* Intensity IV – San Francisco, Cebu; Hilongos and Villaba, Leyte
* Intensity III – Esperanza, Masbate; Liloan, Cebu; Cebu City; Lapu-Lapu City; Abuyog, Baybay City, Carigara, and Isabel, Leyte; Ormoc City; Hinundayan, Southern Leyte
* Intensity II – Roxas City, Capiz; Iloilo City; La Carlota City, Negros Occidental; Argao, Asturias, Carcar City, and San Fernando, Cebu; Kawayan and Naval, Biliran; Alangalang, Dulag, and Palo, Leyte; Silago and Sogod, Southern Leyte
* Intensity I – Aroroy and Cataingan, Masbate; Tapaz, Capiz; Jordan, Guimaras; Passi City, Iloilo; Sipalay City and Bacolod City, Negros Occidental; Borongan City, Eastern Samar; Gandara, Samar
Phivolcs said damage may have affected some areas. It added that aftershocks are expected.
