CEBU CITY – Classes and work were disrupted by a magnitude-5.1 earthquake in the Visayas on Monday afternoon, April 6.
The epicenter of the tectonic quake was 17 kilometers southeast of Bogo City with a shallow depth of 10 kilometers.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) initially recorded the quake at magnitude 5.4 before downgrading it to 5.1.
Phivolcs said the quake struck at 3:22 p.m. and had an instrumental intensity at Intensity IV or moderately strong shaking in San Francisco, Cebu, as well as in Hilongos and Villaba in Leyte.
Intensity III or weak shaking was recorded in Liloan, Leyte; Talisay City, Cebu City, Lapu-Lapu City, Leyte, Masbate, and Southern Leyte.
It was Intensity II in other parts of Cebu, including Carcar, San Fernando, Argao, and Asturias and Intensity I in Iloilo, Capiz, Negros Occidental, and Eastern Samar.
The quake struck seven months after Bogo was hit by a magnitude-6.9 tremor on Sept. 30. The city suffered widespread damage and casualties.
In a Facebook live shortly after Monday’s quake, Bogo Mayor Mayel Martinez said no major damage was reported in the city.
“We have sent personnel to the ground for inspections while we also allowed our workers to go home to check on their homes and families,” said Martinez.
While there was no major damage, patients at the Cebu Provincial Hospital-Bogo were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
“Our hospital team is currently conducting a thorough assessment of the facility to ensure the safety and structural integrity of all areas before resuming normal operations,” the hospital said in a statement.
In Cebu City, students rushed out of their classrooms when the ground shook.
Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival said initial assessments showed no major damage. “Initial reports confirm that the impact remains manageable and no major damage has been reported as of this time,” Archival said in a social media post.
Archival is currently on a foreign trip but assured that he is “closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with the Cebu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CCDRRMO) and other agencies.”
Archival said that in his absence, Vice Mayor Tomas Osmeña is overseeing response efforts on the ground. “Our teams are already deployed and conducting monitoring and assessment to ensure everyone’s safety,” he said.
