People of Kalinga are paying tribute to Scout Ranger Capt. Dean Oyando who was killed in an encounter with New People’s Army rebels in Occidental Mindoro on March 29.
Oyando’s remains were brought home to Tabuk City, Kalinga on Wednesday, April 1. A wake is being held at the family residence in Purok Datu, Bulanao Norte.
Oyando, 25, before his return to Kalinga, was accorded full military honors by the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. personally attending Oyando’s vigil at the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City. Oyando was posthumously awarded the prestigious Gold Cross Medal for gallantry in action.
Oyando was accorded arrival honors by the 503rd Infantry Brigade when his remains arrived at their headquarters in Calanan, Tabuk City.
His grieving family, including his mother who clutched his portrait, welcomed his remains.
Among those who paid their last respects during the ceremony was Kalinga Gov. James S. Edduba.
“We pay our respects and give honor to his dedication and commitment in serving the country even at the cost of his life. Your heroism will always be remembered. Salute to our fallen hero. May God be with the family in this time of mourning,” Edduba said in a Facebook post.
People of Kalinga also hailed Oyando as a symbol of courage and selfless service.
Philippine Army commanding general Lt. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete condoled with Oyando’s family.
Oyando’s sacrifice, officials said, will continue to inspire soldiers to serve the nation with courage, honor, and dedication.
