A fisherman stumbled upon an estimated P22.3 million worth of suspected crystal meth or “shabu” in a remote island village in Patnanungan, Quezon, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported on Black Saturday, April 4.
Personnel of the Patnanungan Municipal Police Station (MPS) said the discovery was notified to them at around 3:00 p.m. on Good Friday, April 3, in Sitio Katakian, Barangay Busdak, a coastal community known for its fishing grounds and isolation from mainland Quezon.
Police said a fisherman identified as Felipe Delos Santos Guevarra Jr. alerted authorities after finding three plastic bags containing suspected illegal drugs weighing about 3,280 grams.
“Personnel of Patnanungan MPS received a telephone call regarding the discovery of three plastic bags weighing more or less 3,280 grams of suspected shabu,” a report reaching Camp Crame said.
The report said that the shabu haul has a total estimated value of P22,304,000.00
Patnanungan, one of the island municipalities off the eastern coast of Quezon province, has long relied on small-scale fishing.
Its waters face the Philippine Sea, making it vulnerable to drifting cargo and, at times, suspected contraband washed ashore, according to the PNP.
The PNP said that the recovered items were turned over to the Quezon Provincial Forensic Unit for proper disposition.
The PNP has yet to determine where the illegal drugs came from.
Investigators were investigating whether the packages were abandoned at sea or meant for distribution within or beyond the province.
The Quezon Police Provincial Office said coordination is ongoing for further forensic examination to confirm the substance and trace its origin.
