BuCor to enhance faith-based programs for PDLs rehabilitation
The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said it will enhance the promotion of faith-based programs as major components of the restorative rehabilitation of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).
BuCor Director General Gregorio Pio P. Catapang Jr. said that faith-based approach supports the transformation of the PDLs’ identities and promotes spiritual growth.
Among the faith-based programs are group bible reading, religious worship services, and counselling by religious leaders like pastors and priests.
Catapang pointed out that by fostering empathy, forgiveness, and personal accountability, faith-based programs help create safer environments within the prison compound for healing and reintegration.
In a statement, the BuCor said that its promotion of faith-based rehabilitation is in line with a global movement recognizing the importance of holistic approaches to correctional reform.
Catapang participated in the International Research in Corrections Conference held in Auckland, New Zealand last March.
During the conference, Catapang said he learned that PDLs who participate in faith-based programs showed greater progress toward rehabilitation.
“The PDLs’ increased religious involvement — particularly their enhanced relationship with Jesus Christ and active participation in religious practices — contributed to this positive transformation,” Catapang said.
He also said that PDLs who participate in faith-based programs developed lower tendencies for aggressive behavior against fellow prisoners who wronged them.
Thus, he added that faith-based programs which enhance spiritual growth among PDLs reduce violence within correctional facilities.
