79 arrested for illegal cockfighting in Cebu

CEBU CITY – Just like in previous years, illegal cockfighting locally known as ‘’tigbakay’’ proved rampant in this year’s observance of Holy Week in Cebu province.

The Cebu Provincial Police Office said that 79 individuals were arrested in several areas after they were caught engaging in illegal cockfighting on Maundy Thursday (April 2) and Good Friday (April 3).

The CCPO said 22 anti-illegal gambling operations were conducted during the two-day period. Aside from the 70 arrested individuals, police also seized cash amounting to P19,450.

In Cebu City, 12 persons will spend the weekend in jail after they were caught in an illegal cockfight. The group of men were cornered in Sitio Kasagingan, Barangay Guadalupe past 1 p.m. on Maundy Thursday.

The Guadalupe Police Station rushed to the area after receiving a report about an ongoing cockfight with at least 50 persons involved. While others managed to scamper away, 12 persons were cornered.

The arrested individuals will face charges for violating Presidential Decree 1602 that penalizes illegal gambling.
