Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said that high fuel prices are beginning to impact the province.

Lacson said he observed fewer vehicles and motorcycles, particularly in Don Salvador Benedicto (DSB), during his regular trips to San Carlos City.

“I go home every week to San Carlos City and what I see in the area of Don Salvador Benedicto is that there are definitely fewer motorcycles and vehicles parked on the side of the roads,” Lacson said.

Don Salvador Benedicto, often referred to as the “Little Baguio” of Negros Occidental, is a popular destination for nature lovers.

Lacson said that some people also observed fewer vehicles traveling around the province.

He believes that rising fuel prices is one of the factors discouraging tourists from traveling.

Lacson said the provincial government cannot control oil prices as this authority rests with the national government. “It will be very difficult for many of us if prices continue to increase,” he said.

He added that the power to address fuel price hikes lies with the President while agencies like the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) continue to monitor and regulate prices. “They have their own monitoring. DTI is already doing their job,” Lacson said.

Meanwhile, Lacson reminded the people to prioritize safety, especially on the roads, as the Holy Week comes to a close. “Drive carefully. Our priority is what we are celebrating this week,” he said.

He encouraged everyone to observe a peaceful and meaningful Holy Week and urged reflection, faith, and hope amid ongoing challenges. “Let us reflect on our shortcomings and strengthen our faith in God. May this Holy Week give us hope that, in the midst of trials, we will continue to live with trust in Him,” Lacson added.
