DAVAO CITY – Davao City first district Rep. Paolo Duterte said his father, former President Rodrigo R. Duterte, remains strong and well-cared for while in the custody of the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
Speaking to Alvin and Tourism Wednesday, Rep. Duterte said he met his father who was good and happy and added that former President Duterte advised Filipinos on the ongoing economic crisis.
"He said there really isn't any good way to handle the current economic crisis. In Bisaya, he said 'pugong lang' – restrain from spending, restrain everything," Rep. Duterte said.
The lawmaker said that the former Chief Executive has gained weight and that his knees are strong. "He's being well taken care of. The doctors and nurses are good inside," he added.
Rep. Duterte confirmed that his father is aware of gatherings outside the detention center, particularly those held to celebrate his 81st birthday in Davao City and the country.
Supporters of the former Chief Executive, known as Diehard Duterte Supporters, maintain a visible presence in The Hague following his detention by the ICC.
Meanwhile, Rep. Duterte disclosed that he learned a planned search of his home in Davao City from concerned citizens.
He criticized the administration and warned of legal action against those behind what he called "made-up" operations.
Speaking to Alvin and Tourism and supporters at The Hague, Rep. Duterte addressed circulating reports, including those shared by a vlogger, Boss Mil, alleging that his home in Catalunan Grande was placed under a full alert status.
"I only heard that this morning. If somebody wants to visit the house—if that's the politically correct term—I made some inquiries—it seems that the high-in-illegal-drugs family has a new dog again," Rep. Duterte said.
He said that someone might have paid to do the job and dismissed the claims as a move by the top administration official and possibly a certain tough individual he has known since 2017.
He said that personal grievances may have influenced the spread of the baseless narrative.
"I have known that 'tough' person since way back in 2017. We understand his motives because he holds a grudge. He once applied for a government position before, but he wasn't accepted," Rep. Duterte said.
Rep. Duterte warned that any attempt to carry out what he described as an "invented" search operation would prompt him to file disbarment cases against the person, including judges and lawyers involved.
Davao City Police Office Director Police Col. Peter Madria denied reports of a search warrant being served at Rep. Duterte's house. He added that he verified the information with the Talomo Police Station, which confirmed that no operation took place.
