Things about Easter your kids will ask, and how to answer them

Here's how to turn curious questions into meaningful conversations

Published Apr 1, 2026 10:07 am
As parents, we often get asked questions about Easter that can be simple on the surface, yet open the door to bigger or deeper conversations. Why do we have eggs? Who is the Easter Bunny? Why is today special?
While some answers are easy to give, others can let us pause and reflect. We can use these moments to turn curiosity into meaningful life lessons, helping children connect traditions with values, stories, and experiences.
‘Why do we have Easter eggs?’
Long before Easter celebrations included egg hunts, people already saw eggs as a sign of beginnings. Just like a chick comes out of an egg, Easter reminds us that something new can begin. It is also a way to introduce the idea that after difficult moments, something hopeful can follow.
‘Who is the Easter bunny?’
Though a part of the tradition, it is not in the original story of Easter. The rabbit has always been associated with new life, rebirth, and fertility during spring time. From the Middle Ages, in German Lutheran traditions, the “Osterhase” or Easter hare would judge children’s behavior. If they were good, the bunny would leave colored eggs in nests outside the houses. It is believed that German immigrants brought this belief to America in the 1700s, and eventually evolved into the Easter bunny.
‘Why does Easter change every year?’
Easter doesn’t have a fixed date because it is linked to the moon’s cycle and the arrival of spring. Specifically, Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday, after the full moon that occurs on or after the spring equinox. That’s why the date shifts each year, but the important thing is what Easter represents: new beginnings, hope, and renewal.
‘What is Easter really about?’
This is where the conversation becomes more personal. Depending on your family’s beliefs, you can share that Easter is about hope, renewal, and new beginnings. For Christian families, it is about the resurrection of Jesus and the promise that life continues.
You do not need to explain everything at once. Sometimes, a simple answer is enough. What matters is that children begin to understand that Easter is more than what they see.
‘Why do we celebrate it this way?’
Children are observant. They notice routines, traditions, and even small changes at home. This is a chance to explain that every family has its own way of celebrating, shaped by beliefs, culture, and memories. Some might go to church, prepare a special meal, create Easter-themed crafts, or spend the day quietly together, even reflect. Whatever it may be, these activities will be part of their childhood memories.
Easter is more than colorful eggs, chocolate treats, or playful bunnies. It is an opportunity to introduce ideas like hope, renewal, and new beginnings, and to share family stories and traditions that children will remember for years to come. By answering their questions thoughtfully, we guide them not only in understanding what Easter is, but also in discovering why it matters.
