"We recently convened with the leaders of Kalayaan Island Group (KIG) to express our unwavering support for boosting their local economy, enhancing transport, and uplifting the morale of our fellow Filipinos residing there," Tulfo said.
"Having witnessed their firsthand experience amid the ongoing territorial dispute, this initiative further solidifies KIG’s identity as an integral part of Philippine territory and bolsters our collective efforts to develop the island group," he added.
The National Maritime Council (NMC), under Executive Order No. 57, recommended the adoption of the standard set of Philippine names for 131 features of the KIG located in Kalayaan, Palawan, and the WPS.
Tulfo also stated that the EO is a demonstration of the country's firm stand that the West Philippine Sea is part of the Philippine territory, "especially at a time when many of our countrymen seem unclear about our rights".
"As the Senate Foreign Relations Chairman, I welcome this development, and I will continue to stand firmly behind this administration in advancing and defending our sovereign rights through lawful and peaceful means, consistent with the principles of international law," he added.
