LEGAZPI CITY, Albay – The town of Matnog in Sorsogon province is ready for the influx of people this Holy Week.
Mayor Bobet Lee Rodrigueza said that security measures are in place at Matnog Port, particularly with the expected surge of travelers from Luzon bound for the Visayas and Mindanao.
The local government’s traffic management team has been deployed to handle the anticipated increase in vehicles.
“Personnel from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) have been stationed to oversee order and safety in the area,” Rodrigueza added.
The mayor noted that tourists are expected to flock to Matnog, which has become a well-known destination in Bicol due to attractions such as Subic Beach Resort.
Subic Beach in Calintaan Island is famous for its pink sand – a mix of white sand and crushed red corals – clear and calm waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling, and its relatively quiet, non-commercialized environment.
Often dubbed the “Pink Beach of Bicol” or the “Maldives of Bicol,” the beach continues to draw vacationers despite current challenges.
Aside from Subic Beach, Matnog also boasts Juag Lagoon, an eco-tourism site recognized as a marine sanctuary and fish interaction area.
Another popular spot is Calintaan Cave, also on Calintaan Island, which is part of many island-hopping tours offered in the municipality.
“We expect many visitors despite the crisis. As of now, we already have a good number of tourists here in our town,” Rodrigueza said.
Although the Matunog Festival has been canceled this year, Rodrigueza confirmed that activities and celebrations, especially those related to the town’s fiesta, will be held as scheduled.
Matnog remains committed to welcoming tourists safely while showcasing its natural attractions, balancing both public safety and local tourism this Holy Week.
