BACOLOD CITY – The Land Transportation Office-Negros Island Region (LTO-NIR) on Tuesday served a show-cause order (SCO) to the driver involved in a "gas-and-run" incident in this city.
In a statement, the LTO-NIR said the registered vehicle owner is a female, who resides in Barangay Salvacion of neighboring Murcia town in Negros Occidental.
"The SCO was delivered to her residence and accepted by a family member in her absence," it added.
An LTO-NIR staff later explained the contents of the order to the vehicle owner through a phone call.
The LTO-NIR Intelligence and Investigation Unit's action is based on a viral video showing a multipurpose vehicle hurriedly leaving a gas station without paying for fuel.
A report from the Bacolod City Police Office Station 7 said the incident took place around 8:20 p.m. on Feb. 27 at Red K gas station in Barangay Mansilingan.
Gas station manager DJ Harold Cabo reported the incident the following day.
He said the driver asked to gas up for P500 worth of unleaded gasoline, but fled towards Murcia Road without paying.
In a media interview, an employee of the gasoline station appealed for fairness, citing the impact of the ongoing global oil crisis linked to tensions in the Middle East.
“Pangabuhi lang ta patas para may ibulig ta sa pamilya ta” (Let’s work fairly to help our families), he said.
She has five working days to submit a written explanation or appear before the LTO-NIR office. A separate show cause order will be issued once the driver is identified.
Authorities will assess possible administrative violations, while any criminal charges will depend on the gas station’s decision to pursue legal action.
The LTO-NIR emphasized its commitment to investigating viral incidents and ensuring accountability. (with a report from PNA)
