BAGUIO CITY – La Trinidad, Benguet Mayor Roderick Awingan said the triplet strawberry cake event of the town’s month-long Strawberry Festival has only a few events left before it ends.
“We thank our residents, the people of La Trinidad and our neighboring towns, as well as those from Baguio who joined us in the events for the Strawberry Festival,” the mayor said in an interview with reporters on Monday.
The town held the triplet strawberry cake event on Sunday, an institutionalized event which is an offshoot of the Guinness World Record of the municipality for the largest strawberry shortcake in 2004 that weighed 9,622.23 kilograms.
Awingan said the triplet cake was sold out with 11,000 tickets priced at P20 each.
“We are grateful for the support. The purchase of the ticket is not about sales but about the public's eagerness to be part of something special for all of us with the Strawberry Festival conceptualized as a community,” the mayor said.
Made with 500 kilograms of strawberry jam and 200 kilograms of fresh strawberries for garnishing, the mayor said the cake event is also an opportunity for local farmers to sell strawberries and other products made from them.
Nic Espadero, Valley Break chief operating officer, said 400 pans of shortcake were baked by 60 volunteer personnel, in addition to the 30 staff members who built the triple-layer cake – red, white, and pink strawberry in a basket.
Each year, the strawberry cake event showcases a meticulously planned new design.
La Trinidad is renowned for producing the country's largest amount of strawberries. The festival reminds the town to preserve its identity as the country’s strawberry capital. (PNA)
