Filipina bobsledders turned in solid finishes in their debut appearance at the IBSF North American Cup monobob race in Lake Placid, New York recently.
Rhea Sumalpong and Shirley Salamagos of the Philippine National Bobsled Luge & Skeleton Association Inc. placed sixth and seventh places, respectively, behind Team USA’s Olympic veteran bobsledders Sydney Milani and Sadie McMullen.
Sumalpong, a former Southeast Asian Games thrower, had a combined time of 2 minutes 18 seconds in her two runs behind Milani (2:14) and McMullen (2:15).
Both are active duty members of the Philippine Coast Guard Special Services Center.
“The participation of our women team is a tremendous milestone and accomplishment for Philippine bobsledding,” said PNBLSA President Thelmo Cunanan Jr., whose athletes trained and competed in Austria, Canada and South Korea.
The team is accompanied by manager Heins Lundberg Arlegui and coach Jeffrey dela Cruz.
