The Davao City government announced on Monday, March 30, that it is taking steps toward a more sustainable transportation system by procuring electric vehicles for its official fleet, moving away from traditional, fuel-dependent vehicles.
According to Harvey Lanticse, head of the Davao City Information Office, Mayor Sebastian Duterte issued a directive in 2025 to begin planning for the acquisition of electric vehicles for the local government fleet.
"The procurement activities have since started, following the mayor's instructions," Lanticse said. "Even before the fuel crisis, in 2025, as part of his sustainability initiatives, Mayor Duterte instructed the office to start purchasing EVs for the city."
Currently, Lanticse said, 54 electric vehicles, including multipurpose and disaster response units, are being procured. They are expected to arrive in batches this year, and future purchases will focus on electric rather than diesel.
He emphasized that the city's goal aligns with Section 6 of Republic Act No. 116987, the Electric Vehicle Industry Act, which requires at least five percent of government and private vehicle fleets to be electric.
"We will continue investing in a greener and more sustainable transportation system within the local government unit to reduce emissions and cushion the impact of high fuel prices on both government operations and the community," Lanticse said.
In addition to transportation initiatives, the information officer said the city is also intensifying efforts to ensure food security amid the ongoing fuel crisis, which has disrupted supply and driven up prices.
Lanticse said the City Agriculture Office has conducted food production inventories and coordinated with farmers and cooperatives to maintain a steady and reliable supply of produce for the community.
The city government is providing essential inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, and fisheries support while expanding sustainable farming programs, as food security remains a priority, Lanticse added.
