Reigning champion National University shook off a sluggish start and swept Ateneo anew, 25-19, 25-16, 25-15, to seize solo second in the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball tournament at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila Saturday, March 28.
Determined to atone for a five-set loss to the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, the Lady Bulldogs displayed their championship composure by erasing a 17-19 deficit with a decisive 8-0 run sparked by Arah Panique to steal the opening set from the Lady Eagles.
The surge set the tone for NU, which cruised to its seventh win in 10 outings to move past FEU (6-3). Ateneo, meanwhile, dropped to 1-9, remaining at the bottom of the standings with University of the East (0-10).
The win mirrored the Lady Bulldogs’ 25-18, 25-18, 25-15 sweep of the Blue Eagles in their first meeting last March 8 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Panique delivered the goods this time for NU after tallying 13 points on 12 attacks and one block with five excellent digs, while Sam Cantada collected 10 points, six digs, and 12 receptions.
Vange Alinsug, Chams Maaya, and Alex Mata conspired for 17 points, while Lams Lamina controlled the Lady Bulldogs’ plays with 11 excellent sets and three points. Shaira Jardio, for her part, posted 11 digs and eight receptions.
No one from Ateneo scored in double figures with Zel Tsunashima topscoring with nine points, while Jihan Chuatico and Dona De Leon contributed seven points each to no avail.
Meanwhile, reigning champion NU bared its fangs and outhustled a gritty Ateneo side, 25-21, 25-23, 27-25, for its third straight win to inch closer for another Final Four appearance.
Despite coming off their dazzling display in the first two frames, the Bulldogs kept their poise as they came out resilient by traversing a 15-18 bump in the third set, where Buds Buddin, Peng Taguibolos, and Jade Disquitado sparked the comeback while exploiting untimely errors from the Blue Eagles to seal the match.
Apart from an 8-2 tally at second behind No. 1 Far Eastern University (8-1), the Dante Alinsunurin-mentored crew is one win away from booking its semifinal ticket – a familiar spot which it annually reached since Season 75 – when it faces University of the East next Sunday, April 5, at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.
Ateneo, on the other hand, ended its three-game win streak and dropped to 5-5 at fourth.
Buddin carried the cudgel for NU with 19 points off 16 spikes, two blocks, and an ace on top of five receptions and four digs, while Leo Ordiales and Disquitado chipped in 11 and eight points, respectively. Jimwell Gapultos shone as well with 17 excellent receptions and seven digs.
Aimar Okeke paced Ateneo, which goes for a rebound win against University of the Philippines (3-6) after listing 19 points, one ace, eight receptions and four digs in a losing effort.
