Geely has launched the EX5 EM-i in the Philippines, adding a plug-in hybrid SUV to its local range for buyers who want some of the advantages of electrified driving without going fully electric.
Available in Pro and Max variants, it uses a front-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid setup built around a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine producing 99 PS and 125 Nm, paired with a permanent magnet synchronous motor rated at 218 PS and 262 Nm. Battery capacity is 18.4 kWh, and the pack uses lithium iron phosphate chemistry. Official figures list 105 km of NEDC electric range, 1,000 km of combined range, 1.2 L/100 km weighted combined fuel consumption, 4.3 L/100 km combined fuel consumption, and an 8.0-second 0 to 100 km/h time.
For buyers who want to cover short daily drives on electric power but still keep the range and flexibility of a gasoline-fed vehicle for longer trips, that places the EX5 EM-i in a useful middle ground.
Power and aero
DC charging tops out at 30 kW, with a quoted 30 to 80 percent charging time of 20 minutes. AC charging goes up to 6.6 kW, with a quoted 25 to 100 percent charging time of three hours under 220V and 32A conditions. Vehicle-to-load and vehicle-to-vehicle functions are also part of the package.
At 4,740 mm long, 1,905 mm wide, and 1,685 mm high, with a 2,755 mm wheelbase, the EX5 EM-i sits squarely in family-crossover territory. Ground clearance is listed at 172 mm unladen and 150 mm laden. Geely also quotes a 5.2-meter turning radius, a number that should matter in everyday local use just as much as range or charging time.
Despite its upright crossover shape and tall cabin, drag is quoted at 0.288Cd. More than 20 aerodynamic optimizations and over 150 hours of wind tunnel work were cited in connection with that figure. The cleaner nose, hidden rear wiper, and more carefully managed airflow around the body all serve the same end of improving efficiency without giving up crossover proportions.
Style and practicality
Practicality is one of the stronger points here. Trunk space is rated at 528 liters with the rear seats up and 2,065 liters with them folded, with the quoted luggage space already including a hidden 100-liter compartment under the trunk floor. Geely also quotes 34 storage spaces, 16 seating configurations, and an 84.3 percent usable-space figure, all of which support its role as a family SUV first and an electrified vehicle second.
Inside, both variants get a 15.4-inch HD central display, a 10.2-inch LCD instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, FM radio, USB ports, and Flyme Auto infotainment. Physical controls remain in place for frequently used functions instead of pushing everything into the touchscreen, which should make daily use easier.
Pro vs Max
The split between the two variants is fairly clear. Pro rides on 18-inch alloy wheels with Giti tires and gets a reversing camera, six-speaker audio, manual-folding mirrors, manual front seat adjustment, and Sapphire Blue interior trim. Max moves to 19-inch low-drag alloy wheels with Goodyear tires and adds a panoramic power sunroof with power sunshade, power tailgate, power-folding mirrors, 256-color ambient lighting, powered front seats, ventilated front seats, driver memory, wireless charging, a windshield head-up display, front parking radars, and a 360-degree panoramic camera with transparent chassis view. It also upgrades to a 16-speaker Flyme Sound audio system with two headrest speakers and adds Amber Brown as an interior option.
Safety equipment is strong on both trims. Standard items include EPB, auto hold, AEB, ACC, ICC, lane keeping assist, emergency lane keeping assist, front collision mitigation support, and traffic sign identification. Max adds intelligent high beam control, rear collision mitigation support, rear cross traffic alert, rear cross traffic brake, door open warning, lane change assist, and blind spot detection.
Underneath, it uses a MacPherson front and multi-link rear suspension setup. Details shared at the launch also pointed to larger subframe bushings and aluminum steering knuckles intended to reduce vibration and cut unsprung mass, while seat design and cabin packaging were given just as much attention as the powertrain itself.
Priced to compete
Pricing starts at ₱1,288,000 for the Pro and rises to ₱1,468,000 for the Max. Until May 31, buyers can also get a ₱20,000 discount, along with a 3.3 kW portable charger and a 7 kW wall charger. Geely is also bundling a first-launch gift worth ₱50,000, a reservation offer where a ₱1,000 deposit carries a stated ₱10,000 value, foot mats and solar window tint, a referral package with ₱4,000 plus a ₱4,000 PMS voucher for each side, roadside assistance, a six-year or 150,000-km vehicle warranty, and an eight-year unlimited-kilometer battery warranty.
In the Philippines, the EX5 EM-i arrives as a PHEV built around familiar buyer concerns: daily usability, cabin space, comfort, maneuverability, and the ability to travel far without depending entirely on public charging.
