LEGAZPI CITY, Albay – More than 44,000 Albay Electric Cooperative customers here are set to receive a one-time subsidy of P300, Mayor Hisham Ismail said on Friday, March 27.
Ismail said the financial assistance for residential meter holders is part of the city government’s initiative to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices from ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
Ismail said that the subsidy will be automatically deducted from the beneficiaries’ electricity bills, easing the burden on households amid the current economic challenges.
This initiative, however, is still awaiting final approval from the Sangguniang Panlungsod. Ismail urged people to remain patient and assured them that relief is forthcoming.
Ismail appealed to Aleco and the Legazpi City Water District to temporarily suspend their billing policies amid the ongoing crisis.
Under Aleco’s one bill policy, consumers are given a 12-day grace period after the due date to settle their accounts. Failure to pay within this timeframe may result in disconnection.
LCWD implements a two-bill policy granting consumers a 21-day grace period before water services are cut off for unpaid accounts.
Ismail requested an extension of these grace periods to provide residents with more flexibility in settling their utility bills.
He said that the proposal is currently under review by the boards of directors of ALECO and LCWD.
Ismail expressed hope that the request will be granted, emphasizing that such measures would not only benefit Legazpi City residents but could also extend to consumers across the province.
The city government called for cooperation among stakeholders to help ensure a more resilient and economically stable community amid ongoing global uncertainties.
