Currimao suspends festival activities due to energy emergency
CURRIMAO, Ilocos Norte – The municipal government of Currimao has announced the suspension of some activities of the annual Dinaklisan Festival, traditionally held on the last week of April, in compliance with the national government's directive under Executive Order No. 110 declaring a state of national energy emergency.
In a public advisory Friday, the local government unit said the suspended activities include the search for Miss Currimao, street pageant, and street dance showdown.
"These events require extensive preparations, prolonged practice schedules, and significant use of electricity and other resources, thus, we have deemed it prudent to forego them at this time," the LGU said in a statement.
In keeping with local traditions, the municipal government said only the Tuno Festival on April 30 and the thanksgiving Mass and fluvial parade on May 1 will push through in honor of the town's patron saint, Nuestra Señora de La Paz y Buen Viaje.
Vice Mayor Judith Quilala said the suspension will save an estimated P1.5 million on the part of the local government unit and about P3.4 million on the part of the 23 villages and Sangguniang Kabataan (youth council).
Local officials enjoined the public to help prioritize preparedness and the responsible use of resources during this time of economic challenge. (PNA)
